Wedding dress bought online, second-hand or at a sample sale: what alterations to expect

    Natalia4 min read

These dresses are often great value, but they need a little more attention. Here's how to avoid bad surprises.

    Before buying, check

    • Exact measurements (bust, waist, hips, length) rather than just the size label.
    • Previous alterations: a second-hand dress may already have been shortened or taken in.
    • Fabric condition: stains, snags, missing beads, a worn hem.
    • The seller's return policy.

    The most common alterations

Hems, side and bust adjustments, straps and bustles are the most common requests. Sample dresses, often in a small standard size, sometimes need more work in the back.

Even before an appointment, you can write to me through the form describing the dress: where it was bought, its size, the fabric and what you'd like to change. I'll tell you what seems possible; the final quote is given at the fitting.
